When Mumbai Indians is playing at their home turf, i.e. Wankhede Stadium, it becomes certain that we are going to have an astonishing day of cricket. And the super-over drama that unfolded between the two IPL giants, clearly made this match an unforgettable one for me. As soon as Pollard punched Rashid Khan’s googly through the mid-wicket and scored the winning runs in the super over, I jumped off my seat and screamed like never before. The stadium was going insane over each and every run scored and an uncontrollable frenzy of emotions during the nail-biting contest made the place a heaven for cricket fans.
Being a Rohit Sharma fan, I cherished each and every moment while he was batting and when he smashed Khaleel Ahmed’s deliveries for 3 consecutive boundaries in the second over, it felt like the cricketing gods had listened to my wishes. This amazing game of cricket was made even more startling by the wonderful ambiance at the stadium. The stadium has witnessed several glorious battles, not to mention Sachin’s last game of cricket, and that is why it holds a special place in every cricket fan’s heart. The MI vs SRH was no less than a legendary battle of the greats and the way the contest unfolded, it set up so many memories for everyone watching it there at the Wankhede.
After being renovated, the legendary stands at the Wankhede offer an amazing cricket viewing experience. The stadium has always been a pilgrimage for the true cricket lovers and they can enjoy the thrilling game of cricket with the utmost satisfaction. The luxury viewing stands offer all the contemporary facilities like fully air-conditioned halls, buffet dinner, sofas, big screen TVs and what not. The smartly engineered seats are more than comfy and the refreshing sea breeze makes the crowd even more cheerful. This amazing blend of comfort and cricket makes the experience an enthralling one. I had my seat booked in The North Stand and the excitement level of the houseful crowd was just breathtaking. For a foodie like me, the traditional food stalls with tasty samosas and burgers were nothing less than a boon. Outlets of other food and beverage chains were also there to cater to the spectators. Other stalls selling MI t-shirts and goodies were brimming with hardcore fans who wished to dress up as their favorite cricketing starts.
This match left many memories imprinted on my cricket loving spirit. Despite the early struggle, the sheer excellence of Jasprit Bumrah in the super-over made sure that my favorite team MI was moving into the playoffs. But, what makes the game even more special was the experience of watching cricket with a marvelous crowd and in an amazingly hospitable stadium. It is so satisfying to see how the community cricket viewing experience has evolved over the years and how the spirit of cricket connects and cherishes people from all parts of the country and the globe.
